The 10 Most Overrated Cities in the World

Being disappointed by Paris is such a common experience for first-time visitors that there’s even a name for the feeling—Paris syndrome. Paris syndrome is a real condition in which tourists are so let down by the reality of the City of Lights compared to what they’ve seen on movies and social media that they experience feelings of shock, dizziness, sweating, and even hallucinations. Yet, Paris isn’t even the most disappointing tourist destination in the world.

The experts at gambling website King Casino Bonus calculated the odds of being disappointed in major cities around the world. To determine the most overrated cities, they reviewed data from popular review sites for the 85 most-visited cities worldwide. The study evaluated the ratio of five- and four- star ratings to three-stars and below, as well as how often phrases like “very disappointing” were used. Reviews for the top 20 most popular attractions in each city were also weighted as part of the rankings.

The 10 Most Overrated Cities

Keep in mind that even if you visit Bangkok, supposedly the world’s most overrated city, you’ll only have a 16.6 percent chance of being disappointed—so don’t cross these destinations off of your list of places to visit just yet.

Instead, do a bit of research before you travel to see what you can really expect from a destination so that you’re not disappointed when you arrive.

The 10 Least Overrated Cities

If you really don’t want to be disappointed on your next trip, consider visiting one of the least overrated cities instead. According to the study, you’ll only have a 5.7 percent chance of being let down by Naples—personally, I think it’s impossible to be disappointed by Naples if you eat the pizza there.
