Tips on Naples Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Naples Warnings and Dangers

One of the oldest cities in Italy, Naples has many amazing museums and a wonderful local food culture. It is, after all, where pizza was invented. But while Naples has been a tourist attraction for centuries, it has also gained a reputation as a slightly seedy and possibly dangerous place. Here’s what to watch out for.

Train Station Crimes

Like many other parts of Italy, Naples has a large network of public transport options that include buses and trains. While public transport can largely be safe, you should be aware of certain problems. For example, Piazza Garibaldi is adjacent to the largest train station in Naples. This area can be a source of crime, particularly at night. Be wary of pickpockets when entering or leaving the station. Small vendors often gather and they can be highly persistent, demanding that you buy their inferior goods. Be careful of any person who says they are there to carry your bags. This is most likely a scam to steal your stuff.

Street Size

While the major streets in Naples are wide, many Naples side streets are quite narrow. Be careful when walking in Naples as such streets are often badly lit, making it easy for you to get mugged. Keep a map on hand so you always know where you are.

Vespas are small Italian motorbikes. In many narrow streets, a vespa can whiz by and allow the driver to steal your items. When you hear one, get out of the way.

On larger streets, be careful when driving. Renting a car in Naples can make it easier to get around and get to other places in the area, but it can also mean dealing with Naples drivers who tend to regard traffic lights as mere suggestions.

Be Careful in Certain Areas

While much of Naples is fine to visit, there are certain areas you might want to avoid. For example, the Spanish Quarter has been the scene of violence in recent years. Keep away from this area at all times.

Even when traveling in other areas, it is best not to wear flashy jewelry or call attention to yourself in any way. Keep a credit card on hand and use that rather than large sums of cash to buy things.

If something does happen and you become a victim of crime, it is best to fully cooperate with the local police. They will have you fill out a report indicating what happened.
