Berlin Warnings and Dangers

Tips on Berlin Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Berlin Warnings and Dangers

Berlin is one of the finest cities in Europe, and Germans take a lot of pride in their organization and engineering. This means things generally run very smoothly and there isn’t much crime against tourists. At night is when the streets can get dangerous, especially in areas that are not well traveled. Here are some Berlin warnings and dangers that can help you stay safe.

East vs. West

The Berlin Wall is long gone, and going from east to west Berlin is no longer even something you notice. However, especially in the off the beaten path areas of East Berlin, there are reports of skinheads. These people can be violent, and they have a reputation of being racist. Racially motivated crimes are still rare though, usually people are robbed because someone wants something you have.

Traffic

Germans are used to their traffic and take it in stride. Foreigners may have some adjusting to do. Some parts of the city are more designed for pedestrians than others. There are designated bicycle paths in many areas, and you need to watch out to keep from being run over if you are not use to them. Bicycle paths are marked in red, and some have faded to pink.

Scammers

A popular scam in Berlin, and many other major cities, is for beggars to pretend to have an injury, or for a young woman to be carrying around a baby while asking for money. The baby is fake, and the crutch the other one uses is fake as well. These are women who are being forced to work for someone, and all the money goes to that person. These people are not in need. It is generally best to not give them anything. There are also beggars who are said to be drug addicts around Budapester Square.

Animals

There are bear statues everywhere, which is the symbol of Berlin. These critters are not dangerous, but some can be. In some outlying areas there are wild boars, or hogs, which can be aggressive. Wild boars are known to roam the streets of Gruenwald. There are also a lot of dogs in Berlin, and owners do not clean up after their dogs. This is more a warning to watch where you step.

Beer

German beer is famous, and most people want to have some while in Germany. Be aware though that real German beer is quite strong. If you are from the United States, you  will find beer a much stronger drink than what you are used to. Just mind your drinking because you can get drunk a lot faster than you would in the United States consuming the same amount of beer.
