Tehran Warnings and Dangers
Tehran is the capital of Iran. Tehran is a city rich in history and culture, but it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Travelers must be aware of the dangers before they head to Tehran for the first time.
Crime
As in any city with more than 8 million people, crime is a problem in Tehran. Always keep your personal belongings close and don’t set your purse or wallet down in a public place. Travelers to the city also should be on the lookout for fake police. While rare, some men drive around the city, pretending to be police. They’ll ask you for your passport and wallet and then leave you standing there, helpless. Be alert, don’t hand over your passport to anyone without a badge or uniform, and you should be fine.
Traffic, Gutters, and Roads
Traffic is fast-paced in Tehran. The roads are a constant stream of taxis, commuters, and tourists. If you rent a car, map out where you plan to go before you jump on the road. Also, look out for potholes and hazardous roads. Most of the streets are well maintained, but some are in bad shape and can cause serious damage to your vehicle. If you’re walking, look out for raised gutters. These gutters are deep and wide and carry water down from the mountains, into the city. During certain times of the year, the water can get quite high and may even flood the streets. When walking around the city, watch where your going and don’t try to walk through the street if it’s flooded.
