Tourist Traps in Cabo San Lucas Taxis

Cabo San Lucas is a tourist town, and you could say the town itself is a bit of a tourist trap as nearly everything is priced up due to the flooding of international tourists. Watch out for taxis, as there are several ways you can be swindled out of money.

Keep Your Wits

After you deplane you will instantly run into a throng of people. This includes both tourists and taxis. With so many people around you may feel rushed and try to compete with the rest of the tourists in order to find a cab. Don’t do this because you’ll end up in an overpriced cab and pay a fortune to get to your hotel.

Don’t Listen to the Cab Drivers

After you pick up your bag, in the throng of people, there will are individuals who will basically do anything to get you to their vehicle, including saying they are with the police, immigration, or the government. Don’t listen to them.

Individuals with any Mexican police department are clearly marked and identified. You can’t mistake them for anyone else. If they are dressed normal, they are not police or from the government. Additionally, you have no reason to go with any immigration authorities, so unless you’re told to at a check point or security post, this is fake as well. Avoid these people and don’t follow them. Only grab a cab driver right next to their cab.

You’re Basically Stuck with the Price

The thing about the airport pickup, though is you’re basically stuck paying what is quoted. The price for a taxi is listed throughout the airport and on the side of taxis. You can negotiate anywhere else in the city, just not the airport. However, there are two other options. First, you can rent a car. If you do, make sure your credit card provides insurance or you purchase insurance through the rental service as fender benders are more likely here. Or, you can have your hotel provide the pickup. Many hotels do offer airport pickup services, so ask your hotel ahead of time to pick you up from the airport to avoid the expensive taxi services.
