Canberra is the capital of Australia and is also the largest city in the interior of Australia. If you are traveling to Canberra and you want to learn about the surrounding area, here are towns and suburbs that are off the beaten path for tourists that you should visit.

Narrabundah

Narrabundah is home to a significant number of Canberra’s small Aboriginal communities and organizations, including the Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service which provides free health care to the local Aboriginal people. The outside of the Health Centre building has a number of rather nice Aboriginal paintings that are worth seeing. There is also a white pebble mosaic path in the middle of town that represents links to the aboriginal and European history of the area.

Pialligo

Pialligo is located by the Canberra airport. Pialligo contains a garden center with gift shops and quality cafes and it is usually quiet during the weekdays. The cafes are usually open for breakfast and lunch, but if you are going to go on a weekend, you should call to make a reservation at one of the cafes if you want to make sure you get a seat.

Batemans Bay

Batemans Bay in located in the South Coast area and is an only two-hour drive from Canberra. The South Coast is the beach destination for Canberra people. You can spend the day or stay overnight. There are lots of hotels, motels, and a caravan park in the Bay area you can stay in.

Eden

Eden is located south of Canberra along the Sapphire Coast. Eden has the 3rd deepest natural harbor in the world and the town started its life as a whaling town. There is a whale museum, shell shop, wood turning shop, art gallery, and boat cruises that will take you out to watch dolphins and whales. This is also a favorite spot to watch the workings of Abalone divers as well.
