Ilha da Berlenga Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Ilha da Berlenga Transportation

The only way to find transportation to the Portuguese island lha da Berlenga is by boat, a requirement of the strict environmental regulations placed on this area. Three boat companies are available to tourists, including one daily ferry.

Renting a Boat

If you want to travel to this obscure tourist destination, be prepared to take a boat, available from spring through autumn. The only way to access this small but beautiful island is through one of three different boat companies. Most rides are around 15 euros per person. The area is so little known that English-speaking tourists might find it rare to encounter others who speak their language, making it a refreshing retreat from the more well-known tourist destinations. You can find secure paid parking on the mainland in Peniche by asking the ticket salesperson. The boat ride there and back tends to take about four hours. If you’re looking to stay in the Berlengas, you can find accommodation on land there rather than returning the same day. Many of the smaller boats take around 10 passengers, so if a boat is full, you may have to wait or go with a different company.

Taking the Ferry

One alternative if you don’t want to ride on a small boat in close contact with other passengers is the daily ferry. This much larger boat runs to the island and back two times per day in the summer, which is peak tourist season, and one time per day the rest boat season (spring through fall). Because of the ferry’s infrequent trips, it is easy to miss a ride, forcing travelers to find alternate transportation in the smaller boats.
