Houston Things to Do
If you’re headed to Houston, you won’t have trouble finding things to do. With its moderate climate, it’s easy to take advantage of the many offerings around town.
Houston is home to a wide variety of museums that provide the perfect opportunity to learn something new. The Houston Museum of Natural Science is almost like visiting five different museums in one. They have a planetarium, a butterfly habitat, a Hall of Paleontology that shows prehistoric beasts in lifelike action, an earth science area with rocks and minerals, and a large theater. You’ll definitely want to spend the whole day here.
The permanent collection at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts includes pieces from around the world and different time periods, from ancient art to photography. Traveling exhibits always offer something new to see. Even if you don’t want to head inside, people enjoy the sculptures in the areas outside the building.
If the past is your thing, try heading downtown to Houston’s historic districts. Market Square Park is the center of it all, and you’ll find lots of fun shops and buildings around here. When the weather’s nice, there’s often free entertainment as well.
While you’re in the downtown area, check out the Houston Visitors Center. It’s huge and you’ll be able to pick up enough pamphlets to keep you busy for a while. These can help you find some historic tours in the area, such as an architectural tour or a tour of Houston’s famous haunted places.
Fun for Kids
Kids driving you crazy? Take them to see the other animals at The Houston Zoo. It’s small compared to the zoos in larger cities, but it’s still a good experience for the little ones. There are daily shows and a petting zoo inside. Alternatively, the aquarium in the downtown area is a fun destination for those who want something a little different.
Older children will go wild for the NASA Johnson Space Center. You’ll get to see where astronauts train and even get a sense of what it feels like to sit in Mission Control. Even adults will get excited to see everything the Space Center has to offer.
Ready to do some shopping? Head to the Galleria Mall, which is the seventh largest mall in America. It’s home to many high-end stores, but a lot of people just like to come and gawk at its size. With three floors and over 300 shops, it’s easy to see why. What’s especially amazing is the ice skating rink you’ll find on the first level. Skaters can be seen by the shoppers on the upper levels.
