Fiji Travel Guide: What to Do in Fiji

Best Time to Go to Fiji

With a tropical maritime climate, there is a range of weather in Fiji, even from one side of an island to the other. The rainy season is summer (November to April), during which hurricanes or cyclones are possible. Even though December and January are rainy, they are also busy because of holiday travelers from New Zealand and Australia, not to mention Fijians overseas returning home for the holidays. The coolest and driest months are May through October. During this high season, prices are also at their peak, especially in July and August. Hotel rooms may be hard to find during school holidays — late April to mid-May and mid-August to early September.

Fiji on a Budget

The local currency is the Fijian dollar, and you should carry plenty of small bills, as taxis and other businesses rarely have change. You’ll need the change to cover the whopping 12.5 percent value added tax (VAT) on all tourism transactions. All-inclusive resorts, including “budget resorts,” offer good deals, especially during low season. If you don’t mind going with the flow, ask for walk-in rates. Stay in dorms or local homes to save even more. Still, lodging is where you’ll spend most of your budget. Restaurants and shops often are a bargain. Local markets have cheap produce. Even the transportation is reasonable, with the exception of island hopping, which is pricey.
