Egypt Travel Guide: What to Do in Egypt

Best Time to Go to Egypt

Summers throughout Egypt can be scorching. Average temperatures in June, July and August are typically in the mid-90’s. March, April, October and November will feature the most consistently bearable weather without the intense summer crowds comprising locals on school holidays. December and January are the coldest months of the year, during which the mercury can fall into the 40’s at night — with a corresponding drop in vacation costs. More southerly Nile River destinations like Luxor and Aswan can be slightly hotter, and most Nile River cruises occur between October and April. One caveat: As a Muslim country, shops and tourist attractions may have limited hours during festivals and holy days.

Egypt on a Budget

Although Egypt certainly has its share of five-star hotels and restaurants, shoestring travelers will find no shortage of budget options in the form of hostels and local hotels. Mid-range hotel options, especially in Cairo, include popular international chains. Cheap eats typically highlight Middle Eastern cuisine — hummus, kebabs and the like. For shoppers, haggling at bazaars is part of the game — and it’s also a way to save a few bucks. Interestingly, the oppressive heat of the summer months coincides with school holidays, so airfare and accommodation costs rise with the thermometer. The best deals are typically reserved for travel in December and January.
