Oahu, HI

The warm blue water, oceanfront hotels, and crowded beaches of Honolulu have been attracting visitors for as long as bikinis have been in fashion. But Hawaii's capital is known for more than just sun and surf. Museums and historic monuments provide alternatives to the beach, and opportunities for outdoor adventure and nightlife keep things lively. Honolulu, including Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, offers visitors who come to Hawaii's most popular island plenty of reasons to stay. Flights to Honolulu touch down at Honolulu International Airport, the largest in the state of Hawaii.

When To Go

With sandy beaches and year-round warm weather, Honolulu is an ideal vacation destination. The most popular time to visit is in the summer, when families are traveling and honeymooners take time off. Visitation also rises during the holiday period from mid-December through mid-January, as schools are on break and people are on vacation. Fewer people visit during the shoulder seasons in late spring and fall, when school is back in session. However, in recent years, the high seasons are becoming longer, which is almost eliminating shoulder seasons. Visitation is lowest in the late fall and winter (except for holidays), but pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices make them ideal times to visit.

high season: June to mid--September, mid-December to mid--January
low season: November to mid--December, mid-January to March
shoulder season: April to May, mid-September to October

Weather Information

Honolulu is sunny and warm throughout the year, with an annual average temperature ranging from 70 to 85 degrees. The warmest weather occurs during June through October, with high temperatures in the upper 80s. Average highs drop into the low 80s November through May, with the heaviest rainfall in December and January.

Crowd Information

Beaches, hotels, and activities tend to get busy during the summer and winter holidays, while the spring and fall are a little more low-key. However, major annual events attract crowds throughout the year, including the Honolulu Festival in March, the Aloha Festivals in September, and the Honolulu Marathon in December.

Closure Information

Hotels, shops, and attractions remain open year-round.

When to Save

The least expensive time to visit the city is during the late-fall and winter low season (except for the holiday period of mid-December through mid-January) when discounts are offered on hotel and airfare due to fewer people visiting the island. Prices are highest in summer and during the winter holidays, when there is an increase in visitation.
