For the Locals
If you want to enjoy a night out with the Tanzanian locals, here are a few places that you should go. If you are a tourist, make sure you are aware of your surroundings as you go to some of the poorer neighborhoods. You can visit any of these places with no more than a cheap taxi ride.
The Royal Chloe Social Club is rarely referred to by its proper name. It’s more well-known as The Corner Bar, The International School, or Bengas‘ Place. It is located in Masaki district on Chole Road, and it’s known for excellent local Mishikaki (kebabs) and Kuku ya Kinyege (Local Chicken). If you are taking a taxi or bajaj to the bar, tell your driver that you want to go to the corner bar on Chole road.
One of the most popular Tanzanian bars is Billycaners. You will be surprised by the energy in this small club, which is located off of a quiet, unsuspecting street. The club has live music and puts on a great show. Lots of young people who live in Dar es Salaam frequent this place. Also, for those who are interested in reggae music, the Maisha Club is a popular place for young people in Dar es Salaam.
One place that might have a mix of locals and expatriates is the Garden Bistro, where local Mishkakai barbecue is sold in the back. There is plenty of parking at this place since it is further from the city center.
International
At these bars, you will probably find more expatriates and international workers than local Tanzanians. If you are an expatriate and looking for a taste of home with an African flair, these might be the best places to go.
Qbar is located in the expatriate neighborhood and boasts live bands that play American music. The bar, which is also a guest house, has great food and pool tables. Closer to the center of the city is Level 8, which is located on the top floor of Kilimanjaro Kempinski Hotel, in the heart of the city along the water. The club has large windows providing a stunning view of the bay and an outside terrace where you can enjoy the sea breeze. If you are looking for more of a nightclub atmosphere, Runway, Jolly Club, and California Dreamer are some popular options.
