Mont Saint Michel Transportation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Mont Saint Michel Transportation

Historic Mont Saint Michel is one of the landmarks of France. Despite being isolated, it’s surprisingly easy to visit. You can drive, take a bus, take a train and even walk.

Driving

While you can’t drive to the island, you can drive to a parking lot that will bring you to a bus. You’ll be charged a daily parking fee. The parking area is easily accessed by highways from the rest of France.

By Shuttle Bus

Buses go frequently from the mainland once you’ve parked the car. The free bus trip takes about fifteen minutes and brings you to the foot of the mountain.

By Train

Trains go from lots of places in France directly to the Saint Michel train station. You can even take a day trip by train from Paris. It’s long trip but if you get out early and catch the Gare Montparnasse at 7.05 a.m. to Rennes you can take a bus to the mont. Expect to be home before midnight.

Walking There

If you’re up for it, you can walk there. This is the way the pilgrims saw the monastery when it was first created. The popular walk takes about half an hour across a walkway that leads directly to the foot of the mountain. Keep in mind that the walkway is flooded during certain tides. The tides can come in swiftly. Make sure you know when the tide is likely to come up so you don’t get caught and get wet.
