Zakopane offers shoppers a limited but unique experience. Visitors to Zakopane will find everything from handmade goods sold on the street, to high-end clothing at designer outlets.
Department Stores and Designer Outlets
Krupówki Street has hundreds of little shops selling jewelry, art, hiking gear and pretty much everything else you can think of. You’ll also find major retailers on like H&M, and Reserved – a sort of lower priced Banana Republic – on Krupówki Street. H&M here offers better quality, and lower prices, than in the U.S. Forty little boutiques line a quaint wooden street right off of Krupówki. There, you’ll find outlets for designers like Moncler, Armani, Ecco, Escada, Unique, Pepe Jeans, Descente, and more.
Local Shops and Specialties
Zakopane has many souvenir shops that sell items from the Zakopane and Tatras regions. Most are located near Krupówki Street, and some near the main railway station. Nowhere in Poland beats Zakopane for handcrafted items such as leather goods, wool knitting, wood carvings, or linen. Another popular item, bead necklaces made of red coral, indicate high financial and social status. The little football shaped cheese that you will see everywhere is known as Oscypek. It comes in fresh or smoked, and each has a distinct flavor. Street markets have the usual souvenir choices including hand painted ceramics, key rings, pendants, regional dolls, T-shirts, maps, postcards and the famous Oscypek smoked cheese. There’s a 24-hour supermarket on ul Kosciuszki, not far from Krupówki. It’s a good place to stock up for a picnic, or a hike in the mountains.
