Wanderu Now Lets You Search for Amtrak Trains, Too

SmarterTravel

The search website for U.S. bus travel, Wanderu.com, has added a search capability for four Amtrak trains in the East.

When you check out trips from Boston to Albany, for example, you can compare prices and schedules of Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited with what’s available from regional bus companies. Other Amtrak trains in the Wanderu data base are both Silver Service trains between New York and Florida and the Palmetto between New York and Savannah, with more presumably to come.

I first looked at Wanderu last September, and I found it a work in progress. It did not show, for example, any bus service between Medford, Oregon, and Sacramento, although it showed four daily Portland-Sacramento Greyhound trips, all of which stop at Medford. It still doesn’t. And even now, although it shows BoltBus, Go Buses, Greyhound/Peter Pan, and Megabus services between Boston and New York, it does not include LimoLiner’s deluxe bus.

Last September, a spokesperson told me that Wanderu was “rolling out” its coverage East to West, and hadn’t really covered the West coast fully. That still seems to be the case. Where Wanderu does cover, however, you’ll find that booked-in-advance bus trips can be astonishingly inexpensive, the travel times aren’t bad, and the new buses offer a lot of comfort and convenience features.

I admire Wanderu’s ambition to become the go-to website for U.S. ground transportation. It isn’t there yet, but the addition of some Amtrak routes to its search engine is another step in the right direction.
