Transportation in Quebec: Via Rail (train)

Train travel between Quebec and Montreal can be very convenient. To get the most out of your transportation in Quebec via rail train, book in advance for a reasonable price and pleasant experience.

The Gare du Palais

Quebec’s main railway station is the Gare du Palais, which is situated towards the Old Port on the edge of downtown. It is at the bottom of the hill from the Old City and is within easy walking distance. You might, however, want to consider a taxi if you have luggage. This railway station harks back to the golden age of rail travel. Canadian Pacific built this to complement the iconic Chateau Frontenac hotel. Today, there is only one railway line to Montreal and four trains each way daily, but the station also has local and regional bus services. The journey into Montreal takes three hours and from there joins the rest of the Via network to further places.

Rail Station Features

Despite its under-use as a train terminus, the station is well-supplied with restaurants frequented by locals. These restaurants range from upscale dining to the casual buffet. There are also shops for fast food and magazines if you might need them. During the winter, the trains can be canceled due to snow and have a bus service substituted. But, you do get a freebie sandwich and water bottle if that happens!

Visitors report that the seats inside the train are larger and more comfortable than other places. Booking in advance for a one-way ticket is reasonably priced, but may become pricier for round trips with more than one person. The Station’s train and bus ticketing areas are inside each entrance. No lockers exist, but the station will store your bags at the Via Rail baggage section for a small fee.
