Vermont in Autumn’s Peak

Author: Cheryl D.
Date of Trip: October 2009

In the past autumn meant a four hour road trip up to the Adirondack mountains. The colors were unparalleled with any I had seen…until now! Friends from Germany made their first trip to the USA in search of autumn’s splendor and so as all Europeans do, they chose Vermont.

We flew into Boston and rented a car. With our own GPS we punched in Sugarbush ski lodge and were on our way. I was a bit concerned since they ski the Alps in Austria. I could only imagine their dissapointment when they viewed our small hills by comparison. I was never so wrong! The oohs and ahhs became almost constant as we climbed north up 100. The colors were truly amazing and the mountain views were incredible.

I was not happy with Sugarbush Lodge since the walls are paper thin and its bad enough to be awakened in the night by our own bathroom needs let alone the vacationer up over your head. The lodge is very clean and everyone is very nice otherwise. It is in walking distance to the slopes and on every other account its an inexpensive nice stay!

Let me take this time to say there are NO gondolas on Sugarbush no matter the advertised photos. We made that mistake and found that the photo is very deceptive and is an old one put out for their anniversary. Up Sugarbush access road in Warren VT you will find many styles of accomodations to meet everyone’s taste.

For my next stay in Vermont I am going to STOWE!! Now this is a mountain with a gondola view that will leave you speachless!…except for constant oohs and ahhs! Its the highest peak in Vermont with the most incredible views. At the summit is a lovely restaurant but be aware it closes at 3pm and is in high demand. The town of Stowe is as quaint and lovely as you can possibly imagine with tons of shops and restaurants. My advice…go to Stowe! Stay in Stowe! And next autumn return to Stowe. Unless of course if you are going to ski the Alps!
