Los Angeles is home to celebrities, shopping, culture, food, and entertainment. But like any major city, there are areas to avoid. Here are some Los Angeles warnings and dangers to be aware of before your trip.

Gang areas in Los Angeles are concentrated in neighborhoods that are far from tourist attractions or entertainment areas. Downtown Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, Culver City, Venice, Inglewood, Compton, Santa Monica, and Van Nuys are known for gang activities and groups.  If you happen to be staying in a hotel in one of these areas, be sure to ask the concierge to arrange for transportation to the more popular tourist areas.

The University of Southern California is one of the most popular places in Los Angeles to experience IMAX, science museums, and other cultural events and entertainment. If you're driving there, park in a parking lot near the buildings that will house your event plans. Do not visit these events alone. Travel with a friend or in a large group.

Westwood is an area of Los Angeles that's popular for staging protests. If you plan to visit the Westwood area, catch the local news to see if any protest plans have been made public.

Los Angeles is surrounded by several attractive beaches, and during the day these beaches are a major tourist attraction. However, if you are looking to avoid the large crowds during the day or the daytime heat, going at night might seem like a fun option. It can be dark and chaotic, however, and if something were to happen to you, there may be no one around to help. There are no lifeguards or beach patrols at night. If you choose to experience a Los Angeles beach at night, find one with a well-lit pier or a restaurant with a private, well-lit beach.
