If you're not already a customer of

    Uber

, the online taxi service that's threatening to disrupt both the taxi and rental-car industries, this limited-time promotion could be just the incentive needed to get you to try it.

That's obviously Uber's hope, and it's likely to prove a realistic expectation.

The offer is in the form of a two-part referral bonus: 1) Uber members who refer a new member earn a $30 referral credit; and 2) the newly referred member also receives a $30 credit. The credit can be used for all Uber ride types except UberTAXI.

So, if you're not already a Uber user, find someone who is and register using his referral code. You'll both receive $30 Uber credits.

And if you're already signed up with Uber, refer a friend who isn't yet a user. That will also net each of you a $30 credit.

Uber's previous referral bonus was $10, which would have only partially covered the cost of most rides. With a $30 credit, the cost of almost all rides should be covered completely.

There's no published end date to the promotion, so it could be scaled back or withdrawn at any time.

Note: Uber isn't yet ubiquitous. There's a list of cities where the service is currently available

    here

. If your home city, or cities you're likely to visit, isn't on the list, this promotion is obviously of negligible value.

    Uber on!
