TSA Employee Misbehavior Up Twenty Six Percent

It probably won’t come as a surprise to any flyer that things are getting worse, not better, with the TSA. CNN says that a new report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) finds a 26 percent increase in misconduct by TSA employees between 2010 and 2012.

The number of misconduct cases within the agency increased from 2,691 in 2010 to 3,408 in 2012, with about a third of the cases involving officers being late or not reporting for work. Scarily, about 25 percent of the misconducts were security failures, and about 10 percent involved inappropriate comments or abusive behavior.

The report went in to detail, citing specific violations committed by TSA officers. In one case, a TSA agent tried to sneak a relative’s bag (containing “numerous prohibited items”) past security without going through screening. The punishment? The agent was only suspended for seven days.
