Top Things to Do In Savannah, Tennessee

Savannah Things to Do

Savannah, Tennessee is the site of the Battle of Shiloh, which was a pivotal battle in the Civil War. It is also the home of the Pickwick Landing State Park which was once a steamboat landing and is now the site of a dam and recreational lake.

Historic District and Trail

On College Street, just off of Main, is a two-mile stretch of homes in the Queen Anne and Colonial Revival architectural styles. The tour and trail encompasses about 17 residential structures and one commercial building. These architectural jewels were constructed between 1850 and 1950 and the entire stretch was added to the National Historic Register in 1980 and 1993. There are tour maps available at the Tennessee River Museum located on Main Street.

Tennessee River

An important part of life in the town of Savannah is the Tennessee River which runs the length of Hardin County and upon which sits Savannah. There are great opportunities for recreation at Pickwick Lake, and the Dam created during the Depression by the Tennessee Valley Association is still operational. The Pickwick Dam remains of the major employers in the region. The dam also provides electricity to the area. During the Civil War, Tennessee played a key role in the Union’s victory at the Battle of Shiloh, which took place close by.

Cherry Mansion

Constructed in 1830, this home is the oldest surviving structure in the town of Savannah, Tennessee. The large white house is situated at the end of Main Street and is perched upon a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River. The owner of the home was a Unionist during the Civil War and allowed Union Army officers use of the house when there was activity in the region. One of the home’s claim to fame is the fact that General Ulysses S. Grant spent the night there during the month of April, 1862. It was from Cherry Mansion that he boarded a steamer up to the site of the Battle of Shiloh. On the first day of the battle, General William H.L. Wallace fell mortally wounded and was transported to the mansion where he later died. There are also a Civil War Era piano and writing desk on view.
