Tips on Warnings or Dangers in Berkeley – Stay Safe!

Berkeley Warnings and Dangers

Sitting right on the East shore of the San Francisco Bay and home to one of the nation’s premier research universities, the city of Berkeley draws visitors from all over the country and the world. But like all cities, there are potential dangers visitors should be made aware of.

Areas Wise to Avoid

As with most cities, there are bad parts of town along with the good. When it comes to Berkeley, however, it is particularly wise to avoid certain areas at night. Steer clear of People’s Park and the side of the interstate opposite the marina once the sun goes down. And while historically South Berkeley has been considered a dangerous area, recent years have seen it clean up considerably. Still, be careful if traveling through this neighborhood at night.

Stay Alert on Public Transportation

Public transportation is a great way to get around and see the city’s sights, but it’s also a prime location for criminals to prey on out-of-town visitors. When taking a bus, train or waiting at a BART station (or even just waiting for a taxi), remain alert of your surroundings and try not to look like you aren’t very familiar with your surroundings. And as always, keep your valuables close.

Transients and Homeless People

More people associate the neighboring cities of Oakland and San Francisco with homeless populations, but they exist in Berkeley as well. What is more unique, however, is the amount of youth transients that frequently make their way through the city. While many transients and homeless people are perfectly friendly, the few who are not make it important to be on your toes when around them.
