Streets to Avoid

The old area of Valencia was affected by a major flood in 1957. In the aftermath of the catastrophe, many people left the area for more modern neighborhoods. Despite the efforts of the local authorities in the last two decades, there are still some areas that are dilapidated: ruins, buildings falling apart. In some parts of the Velluters and El Carme neighborhoods, prostitution and drugs are not uncommon.

Pickpockets

As in many destinations, pickpockets are common in crowded areas. When you are in Valencia be especially aware during any festival, such as the Falles, as thieves are attracted to the crowds and come as unwanted guests to steal your wallets, cell phones or other valuables.

Restaurants

Many substandard doner kebab restaurants and cafes have recently sprung up around Valencia. There are only a few authentic Turkish doner kebab restaurants in Valencia: The others leave the meat on the spit over night and just reheat it the next day. Overnight, the meat gathers bacteria and makes patrons sick. The University of Valencia has done research on the types of bacteria found in the meat and the results were very disturbing. Avoid unclean restaurants in general, but especially shops like these ones.
