Thailand Warnings and Dangers
Thailand is a country located in the southeastern portion of Asia that has increasingly become industrialized over the last century. Though tourism is a significant source of its economy, travelers should be aware of local dangers in order to stay safe.
Taxis
Tourists should keep in mind a few tips regarding the taxis in Bangkok. Available taxis are the ones with a glowing red vacant sign. There’s no need to negotiate the fare, since all taxis in Bangkok are now metered. This should be a warning to visitors. If a driver refuses to use a meter, this is an indication that something suspicious is happening. If he insists on giving you a fixed fare, instead of using the meter, it’s best to find another cab. Don’t be surprised if the driver refuses to take you where you wish to go. There’s nothing you can do about it but try your luck with the next taxi. In other cases, taxi drivers may and take detours or long routes to drive up the price.
Theft
Visitors should take some sensible precautions when visiting the area in order to avoid theft. Always stay in a reputable hotel instead of one that’s less reputable but more affordable. A small hotel will not take any responsibility for your belongings. For anyone staying overnight, it might be a good idea to have your valuables stored in a safe. Reputable hotels will provide you with this service in many countries. When walking around the city, be fully alert. Visitors should watch all their belongings, especially items such as a wallet or purse.
Patong District
The Patong District is like a red-light district. As such, it will be filled with less than reputable individuals offering various, untoward services. There are a number of sex workers in the area, and many of the working girls will aggressively try and get business from men. The district is also the source of a bit of theft and violence, making this one part of Phuket to avoid.
