Wear Flats in Old Town
Bosnia and Herzegovina have gone through a lot in recent years, although the region has seen an increase level of tourism as of late. If you're planning a visit to the town of Sarajevo in Bosnia, make sure to look out for these potentially dangerous situations.
Old town Sarajevo is the crown jewel of the city's tourism sector. It is also the main focus of pickpockets. With the streets closely confined in this area of the city, it is easier to steal someone's belongings and disappear into the throng of people. To avoid having your valuables stolen you need to play it safe. Keep your wallet in your front pocket and don't have all your credit cards in one place. This way, if someone does somehow end up with your wallet you will still have some spending capability. If you have a purse, wear the strap over both shoulders (the same is true with backpacks). Doing so reduces the chances of a pickpocket targeting you.
When asking for directions or for recommendations, listen to locals. They will tell you the best path to go and where to avoid. You may see what looks like a shortcut to the final destination, but it is almost always better to go the way the locals tell you. Play it safe and go the direction indicated by the local.
You may want to go exploring outside of Sarajevo because the countryside is beautiful. If you do so, follow the instructions of signs posted in the area. There are 2,000 square kilometers around the city have not been completely cleared of land mines. So stick to the paths and listen to any potential warnings.
Avoid wearing high heels when visiting the old town. The roadway is made from cobblestone with cracks and loose stone everywhere. It is easy to slip or roll an ankle when walking in heels.
