Pune Warnings and Dangers
The history in Pune, Maharashtra, India, is rich, and it can be delightful to walk around the old district or use the town as a home base for exploring other parts of India. Just remember to keep your wits about you so you’re not cheated out of fares, your belongings, or eat something that will make you sick.
Be Smart About Hiring Cars and Rickshaws
When you arrive in Pune as a tourist, you may be confronted with a line of rickshaws and rental taxis asking you to get in. For the most part, the rickshaw drivers can be relied upon, and most taxis are legitimate. However, sometimes these drivers will try to trick tourists into overpaying for services, such as by charging to transport your luggage. Rickshaw drivers shouldn’t say anything about a luggage charge because it’s included in the fare. There are also cheaper taxi fares available, but these should be avoided because tourists have been known to be robbed or cheated by these cheaper drivers.
Lock Away Your Valuables
Sometimes, even locking your room doesn’t prevent theft. If you’re stepping out for the day and leaving behind your passport and extra cash, make sure to close your windows and lock the valuables in a suitcase. Tourists have had their items stolen out of rooms with open windows, even with bars on them. One theory is that trained monkeys are sent in to find the money.
Be Aware of Where and What You’re Eating
Although it is a standard of travel, be careful when eating at roadside stands in Pune. Sometimes cooks will use whatever meat they can find, including pigs that have been rooting through the local dump. Keep your stomach safe from upset by eating closer to the city at restaurants inside buildings.
