Tips On Oman Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Oman Warnings and Dangers

When visiting the nation of Oman, you need to be aware of several potential warnings and dangers. Educating yourself on these ahead of time will help improve your enjoyment of the nation.

Be Careful Driving

When driving through Oman it can become easy to overly relax as, outside of city centers, there is very little in way of traffic. The roads are fine, although you can encounter the occasional bumpy section. You’re almost always a long distance from any kind of help, so the last thing you want to deal with is a blown tire (always double-check to make sure you have a spare tire before taking a rental). Livestock can also roam the countryside. Camels do wander about freely, so stay on the look out. If you hit a camel you not only will have to deal with paying back damage done to the vehicle, but to the owner of the camel in terms of compensation for the loss.

Women Visitors

There are some regulations women need to know about Oman. As a woman, you should always have your legs covered and you should never expose your shoulders. In the larger cities and major business sectors the rules are a bit more lax, but in rural areas you can be arrested or face other problems. When visiting as a woman, you will undoubtedly have less clothing on than the native women (even if most of your body is covered). This will bring the eyes of men just about anywhere you go. It is best to just continue on. Few, if any, will say anything to you, but don’t make comments about the men looking at you should it happen.

If you need feminine hygiene products you’ll likely only have access to pads. In the business areas of the country near international hotels you may be able to find tampons, but if this is your desired item regarding hygienic products, it may be best to bring some with you. The vast majority of drug and grocery stores will not sell these items.

Taxis

All of the taxi drivers in Oman own their own vehicles. This means most drivers will go out of their way to give you an excellent ride as they want repeat business. However, It also means there are no meters. You will need to bargain for the price, so keep this in mind.

Keep Water On Hand

Oman is a desert country so it will become extremely hot. It is a good idea to keep water with you in order to avoid overheating. The temperatures drop nicely both at night and during the winter months, but during the summer, it becomes a dangerous situation. If you rent your own vehicle, consider purchasing a jug of water to keep in the vehicle, just in case the car starts to overheat.
