Melbourne Warnings and Dangers

Among the most heavily populated cities in all of Australia, the city of Melbourne attracts travelers from around the globe. However, there are dangers you should be aware of in order to stay safe.

Driving Issues

People unused to driving on the left-hand side of the road may have some trouble in Melbourne. If you are hiring a car, be aware of the hook turns in the city. A hook turn is a right-and-turn from the left lane. This leaves the right-hand lane free for traffic and the tram tracks clear for trams. You will see little signs hanging from the overhead lines that say ‘Hook Turn’, where applicable. Also, be cautious when driving in the city in general, since the traffic in Melbourne gets fairly intense.

Crime

There is enough of a drug problem in Melbourne that there are boxes around the city where people can dispose of their syringes. Visitors should be cautious when walking around the city and avoid the rougher parts of town.

While the city is generally safe, there are a few areas where things are more dangerous, particularly at night. Places like Bourke Street, Flinders Street Station, and Gray Street all have a reputation for having people of all sorts, from people who are simply homeless to drug dealers and prostitutes.
