Tips on Maputo Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Maputo Warnings and Dangers

The capital, largest city and chief port of Mozambique, Maputo is one home to more than a million people. Traveling hazards include infectious diseases and poorly kept roads.

When heading to Maputo, make sure you watch your steps at all times. Get a medical exam at least two weeks before you leave so you can get all necessary preventative medications and vaccinations.

Malaria, Yellow Fever, and HIV

Yellow fever is a problem in this part of the world. Fortunately, it can be prevented with vaccination. Get a yellow fever vaccination at least two weeks in advance so it can have time to take effect. Malaria is another rampant Maputo health issue. Malaria is spread by mosquitos and can be dangerous. Fortunately, it can be prevented by taking malaria pills before you leave and while you’re on your trip. Consult with your physician beforehand and let them know of your travel plans. They will ready the medications you need to take so you can bring them with you. Allow at least two weeks for a health exam. When here, try to avoid going out at night unless you have insect repellent on hand, as mosquitos that spread these diseases are most active in the evening. If you feel any flu-like symptoms when you get home, head straight for your doctor and get immediate medical attention. HIV infection is a another serious problem in Maputo. Use basic protection measures including standard precautions if you choose to engage in sexual activities or anything involving needles.

Poorly Kept Sidewalks and Roads

Sidewalks are not kept up well in Maputo. Huge potholes are common as well as upended bricks and sewers that aren’t covered. Watch where you walk. This is also particularly true at night as many of the streets in Maputo are not well lit. Bring a flashlight with you even during a short stroll. The same thing is true of many roads. If you have rented a car, keep a careful eye out for potholes and other problems with the roads.

This is a conflict zone. You need to be careful when taking pictures, especially of the police. Ask permission rather than assume it.
