Tips on Kingston Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Kingston Warnings and Dangers

Kingston is the capital and biggest city on the island. Jamaica’s cultural center, it is home to some fascinating colonial architecture that is still intact today. It is an urban city that springs forth from the jungle. While the city is rife with attractions and things to do, there are some things that travelers should be aware of when visiting the city.

Prostitution

Just like any other large urban area, there are prostitutes in Kingston. They are not particularly aggressive as compared to other big cities, but they are around. If you do not approach them they probably won’t bother you. It is something to be aware of if you are traveling with children or your family.

Try To Avoid Spanish Town

One part of town that tourists should always avoid is Spanish Town, a particularly dangerous part of town. Its layout can be very confusing, making it easy for tourists to get lost there. Locals will try to take advantage of you or even physically rob or harm you while you are there. This area is considered the most dangerous part of Kingston along with Trenchtown.

Uptown and Downtown

Kingston is not generally considered a very safe location for travelers. The city is split in half between two different sections; uptown and downtown. Uptown is the more safe district, but even it should be avoided at night. Though, it is fairly safe during the day. Downtown is poverty-stricken and can even resemble third world countries in some parts. Like Spanish Town, you should only go downtown with a local resident.

Theft

Theft is an issue, especially when it comes to automobiles. Never leave your car unlocked or leave anything unattended in the car when you are away from it.
