Khartoum Warnings and Dangers
The crime rate is low in the Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, because of the large military presence. But as with any large city, taking precautions is necessary to ensure your safety.
Lack of funding has created a gap in the infrastructure of the Sudan. Streets and sidewalks have large potholes. While walking, you must pay attention to the sidewalk ahead of you so you don’t get injured or fall completely though. Many of the streets are made of packed sand with no traffic lights or street lights, and this tends to cause more congestion in the already high traffic areas around Khartoum. When it rains, the unpaved streets become muddy with pooled water where it’s uneven.
Utilities are also an issue in Sudan due to the lack of an updated electric grid. Blackouts are common. Bring a flashlight, a supply of batteries, and a backup power source for your electronics.
Khartoum does not suffer from a high crime rate. Nevertheless, beware of pickpockets in the marketplace. Stow your valuables out of sight. If you want to take photos, get a permit available at the Ministry of Information. If you are stopped by the police or military, do not talk back to them. Be polite. Answer their questions. Civility and cooperation go a long way.
Bring a good bug repellant as there is a large insect population. Drink bottled water and wear sunscreen. Women should not go sleeveless or in shorts. No need for a burka, but be respectful. Also beware of walking alone at night. Take a cab or go in groups.
