Jerusalem Warnings and Dangers
Jerusalem is home to three of the world’s major religions, which make up at least half of the world’s population. This makes it important to a lot of people. It is a very old city, gets very crowded, and is also poses a terrorism threat. Here are Jerusalem Warnings and Dangers.
The Old City
The Old City of Jerusalem is where Jesus walked, and where many other religious figures did as well. These narrow streets are crowded, and there are pick-pocketers. There are also scams in the shops, like charging your credit card in U.S. Dollars instead of Shekels. You need to keep track of the exchange rate, but it is still not a good idea to carry cash. People also can get lost easily after dark, but it is generally safe if you go in groups. It is not safe for women to walk alone at night though. As a tip, East Jerusalem has a reputation of being a bit dangerous at night.
Local Customs
The Jewish world shuts down at sundown on Friday and stays shutdown until the end of Saturday. So just be aware that this will happen and plan accordingly. It is also a good idea to dress modestly around more orthodox neighborhoods so as to not raise the ire of locals.
Jerusalem Syndrome
For about 200 people per year (the percentage is very low but it does happen) there is this medical condition that can develop. Some people become convinced they are a Biblical character. It isn’t usually a huge problem, but something to be aware of.
Terrorism
Just because it is in the Middle East, one needs to be aware of the possibility of terrorism. It is more common in this part of the world, but people are also more aware. If you do accidently leave your bags unattended in the airport, they will likely be confiscated by authorities, for example. Bombings are more likely to happen on buses or at bus stops and at rush hour. While terrorism happens in this area, you are not likely to be a victim, but one should always still be aware of the surroundings.
