Indiana is often referred to as the “Crossroads of America.” The city is a popular destination for sports fans, as it is the amateur sports capital of the United States. It is such a suitable host city for events that it was even given the opportunity to host the Super Bowl, and it did so with great success.

Bad Public Transportation 

Indy is a fairly big city. There is one problem for visitors, though. Most of the locals commute via car causing a low demand for public transportation. The transit system there is bad compared to similar cities. There is no real rail system, except for one monorail between two of the hospitals. There is a bus system, but it is severely lacking. Luckily, most of the great attractions in Indianapolis are located pretty close to each other, so you can get around pretty easily with a ride-share service.

Crime Issues 

Indy is safe overall, but there are still some areas and situations you should avoid while there, like any big city. Downtown doesn’t pose a huge threat when it comes to physical danger, but you do have the chance of having your stuff stolen if you aren’t careful. Make sure to lock your car doors and not leave any valuable in site for passersby who might want to take advantage of your trusting nature. There have been some robberies in downtown Indy, so be careful when using an ATM or walking around at night.

Congestion During the Indy 500 

The Indianapolis 500 is held each year in the city over Memorial Day Weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It is the biggest single-day sporting event in the world, so it is going to cause some crowds. If you are not visiting specifically to attend the race or any of the activities in the month leading up to it, visit at a different time. Other crowded weekends include Black Expo weekend and the Big Ten Football Championship game, held each year at Lucas Oil Stadium, the home of the Indianapolis Colts.

Don’t Speed 

If you are taking a day trip outside of the city, don’t speed. Local law enforcement has been known to target visitors with out-of-state license plates.
