Gloriously colorful India is a land of incredible sights. Just keep in mind that India has some cultural customs you need to know about before heading out. When visiting India, bring bottled water and try be careful on public transportation.

The Tap Water 

You can use the tap water for washing, For anything else, you need to use bottled water. Water that comes out of the tap should be boiled first before adding it to your drinks. Don’t use ice cubes either unless you know they’re from bottled water. When eating street food, look for things that have been peeled and cooked if you have  not yet gotten accommodated to the local food scene.

Safe Travel 

Negotiate the fare before getting inside a taxi. Many taxi drivers speak some English but it can helpful to keep a dictionary on hand in order to facilitate communications and make sure you understand where you’re going. Women who are traveling should look for women’s only compartments when traveling on trains to avoid harassment. When driving, keep in mind that many roads are not always well-maintained because of the tropical climate.

Other Issues 

Monkeys are everywhere in India. They’re not in cages so they may approach you directly. If you see one, try to avoid feeding it and watch your stuff around it. Monkey bites are very dangerous so get immediate help if you get bitten. Another problem can be other wild animals such as leopards. Pay attention to any warning signs. Women should dress carefully when entering houses of worship with modest clothing. Try not to travel alone at night.
