The island of Hvar is known for its rich historical periods, the culture, and the literature. It’s Mediterranean climate, with its mild summers and warm winters, attracts visitors from all over the globe, but travelers must be aware of certain dangers.

Croatia Is a Cash Economy

Believe it or not, not all business owners here take credit or debit cards. There are ATMs but you may pay a high fee for using them. Bring cash or travelers checks.

Taxi Price Gouging

Taxis are well regulated here the same as in the U.S. They must post their prices and give you a receipt if you ask for it, but beware! Some taxi drivers try to ask for a higher price anyway. If the price seems too high and they don’t want to give you the recipe, it is your right to refuse to pay to them. In case of an argument, you can call police and they will be on your side.

Areas to Avoid

In the sun without sunscreen. Tourists get terrible sunburns here. The water without shoes. Stepping on a sea urchin can be quite painful.  The first taxi boats from the Carpe Diem Beach Club. They are too crowded and people have been known to get pushed off. Wait for next boat.

Sea Creatures

Sea Urchins and jellyfish are in abundance here. A good tip is to wear old shoes on the beach just to avoid the pain when you step on a sea urchin. The good news is that sea urchins only live in sparkling clean water. Jellyfish are in swarms on the Dalmation coast and anyone who has ever been zapped by them knows to stay away.

Best Time to Travel

Avoid the crowds of summer and travel after Labor Day when everyone else goes back to work. September and October are the most ideal months to enjoy summertime weather without the crowds and appreciate all that Hvar must offer.
