Tips on Hurghada Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Hurghada Warnings and Dangers

Hurghada is a city in Egypt that sits along the coast of the Red Sea. While a popular tourist destination, there are warnings to heed and dangers to look out for that will help you stay safe.

The Sun

While sunburn is a risk throughout many places of the world, the sun above Egypt is particularly intense and can leave a terrible burn. Visitors are warned to prepare for the daylong exposure that they will encounter while traveling around Hurghada. Only one hour in the sun can be enough to cause a significant burn. Another threat that arises while being exposed to the sun is that of sunstroke. Both sunburn and sunstroke are real risks, and tourists should not only cover up, but also take regular breaks from the heat.

Stomach Issues

Visitors to the region are warned to buy entocid tablets, which only cost two euros for a pack of eight. These tablets help to prevent sickness with a single dose of one to two tablets. However, to truly prevent getting sick, avoid drinking any unfiltered tap water. Fruits should only be eaten if they can be peeled, and vegetables shouldn’t be eaten unless cooked. Even staying in a hotel is no guarantee against stomach issues, so make sure you know where your water is coming from.

Taxis

Taxi rides are a bit fraught in Egypt, so be careful. Tourists are warned to agree on a price before getting into a cab, as well as to make clear what currency they’re paying in. Women are warned to stay in the back of the vehicle to avoid any especially touchy drivers. Taxi drivers will very often try and overcharge you, so never get in an orange cab without correct change. When it comes to paying your fare, try to come outside of the cab and pay through the window. However, make sure you show your driver the money and specifically tell them the amount and currency you’re handing over.
