Guayaquil Warnings and Dangers
As Ecuador’s major port city and the country’s most populous with over two million people, Guayaquil makes an interesting destination. Unfortunately, local poverty is a huge problem and travel here can be dangerous.
A Poor Country
Keep in mind, this a poor country. Average wages are much lower than in the United States and Europe and jobs are scarce. Consequently, petty crime can be a problem in all parts of the city, especially for tourists perceived as rich. Do not wear flashy jewelry and keep an eye on your purse. Try to keep most of your valuable items in the hotel’s safe.
The Port Area
If you are headed to this city via cruise, you may be asked for additional fees before you leave; these are essentially bribes. The port area is one of the most dangerous in the city so take particular care when walking around and void this area during the evening hours if you can.
Female Travelers
Women traveling here should take special care and if possible, travel with another companion. Always be aware of your surroundings. Sexual assault is not unknown here and if you are attacked, you may have little recourse in the local justice system.
Stick to Official Taxis
Stay with official taxis and if you’re not sure, ask your hotel to get one for you. Otherwise, you might step into a tax with a driver who might overcharge you.
