Goa Warnings And Dangers
Goa is a popular stop for backpackers looking for a relaxed, cheap and fun destination. There is a distinct vibe in Goa and it is a favorite destination among young people looking to party and hippie and alternative types. You can have fun in Goa and enjoy the beauty and diversity, but you have to be aware of the dangers.
Don’t Forget Your Common Sense
Drugs are a huge issue in Goa and present a wide variety of problems. The first problem is using drugs here. Many tourists come to Goa for the party. There are raves and trance parties and lots of marijuana, hallucinogens and heroin here. What you need to understand is that drugs are illegal, and the penalty for using, buying, selling, possessing or being under the influence of drugs can be severe.
If you are indulging in these activities and get stopped by police, there are a couple of different ways it can go. You may find that you have to pay off the police or risk being imprisoned. While bribing law enforcement may feel like the lesser evil, it can have devastating effects, especially if it costs you all your money and possessions. This can mean you have no money for food, lodging or even a return ticket home. This has happened. This then puts you in a position of great vulnerability, which won’t go unnoticed by the locals.
The second possibility is you get hauled off to jail. If this occurs, then the above will still hold true. You may end up being fined and sentenced, losing your belongings, money and possibly missing a return flight.
In other words, be responsible and respectful of the laws.
Be Aware Of Others
You’ll meet tons of friendly people on your travels, and many of them will indeed be friendly, however you must exercise caution as not everyone will have your best interests at heart. As with any tourist destination, you’ll run into scammers, thieves and worse. The drug trade there makes matters worse and you could easily find yourself caught up in a bad situation.
Watch Your Drink
There have been reports from tourists who have had their drinks spiked with drugs. This can happen quite easily and you could be taken advantage of or robbed. Keep an eye on your drinks, your friends and your belongings at all times.
Safety In Numbers
Don’t walk around alone, especially at night. Don’t wander around intoxicated. Be vigilant, be respectful and be smart.
Goa Can Be Fun, Beautiful And Safe
Don’t let the horror stories dissuade you from enjoying this destination. You will be fine as long as you don’t make yourself vulnerable. Exercise the necessary precautions and respect local laws. Have fun and stay safe.
