Well-known for its rich cultural history, Gdansk is a popular destination for tourists. But like in any large city, visitors must take precautions to stay safe.

Getting Around 

Gdansk is likely to be crowded in the summer so allow enough time to get to your destinations. Be wary of eager drivers offering taxi rides at the airport, often very persistently, and look for the cars that are clearly marked as official cab companies.

During the off season, crowds are smaller and tickets cheaper, but many tourist attractions are closed from September to late May. You are more likely to find cultural activities, music festivals, outdoor dining, street vendors and performers during the warmer months.

Always validate your ticket before you get on a train, and hang on to it. Ticket inspections are frequent, and fines are steep for unwary travelers. Keep an eye out for pickpockets at crowded stations and on trains and for locals trying to make extra money from unwitting travelers.

If you chose to drive, watch out for obstacles on narrow one-way streets and never leave valuables inside your parked vehicle.

Not all natives are friendly and may not speak English. Bring a good guide book with you as some of the signs can be confusing. Watch where you are walking, though! Public restrooms are few and far between, so it is not uncommon to see a local relieve himself outdoors whenever nature calls.

Pedestrians must yield the right of way to cars and bicycles in Poland. Drivers are known to ignore safety laws, so cross streets with care.

If you go to the beach, beware of strong ocean currents and cold temperatures. Stay close to the shore and limit your alcohol intake if you plan to swim.  Pay attention to the lifeguards, and use common sense.

Dining and Shopping

When dining at restaurants look at the small print on menus for hidden charges and check your bill carefully. Count your change and don’t be too shy to ask for it if a waiter or shopkeeper does not return it.

Authentic antiques are rare because of export laws, so be on the lookout for fake antiques offered by street vendors. Refunds are given only by trading a purchased or broken item for something else of equal value.
