Frankfurt am Main is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and among the largest in the country. Though an inviting city, visitors should be aware of some warnings and dangers before traveling there.

Crime

Unfortunately, as in every big city in the world, pickpockets will try and steal your money. Visitors should be careful, especially at the flea market, where you sometimes have to push your way through large crowds. If you suspect that you’re being targeted, simply walk into the nearest shop. From within, you can safely observe whoever you think might be following you, which will hopefully scare them off. If not, then ask for assistance from the shopkeeper.

Frankfurt is actually one of the German cities that possess the highest rate of crime. Drug dealing, theft, prostitution, and murder exist in the city. However, most of the city’s crime is localized to small areas. The majority of the city is safe, and criminals typically only try and take advantage of tourists in certain parts of town. Areas to avoid include the Hauptbahnhof, Konstablerwache, and Hauptwache. These areas are fine during the day, but be cautious at night.

Entertainment Disappointments

Some of the more modern opera houses in Germany are so well designed that you can see and hear perfectly well from any seat in the house. That doesn’t apply to the Frankfurt theater, so if you attend, try and pick a central seat. Also, some of the restaurants have poor reputations, so check reviews before dining.
