Florence Warnings and Dangers
Florence is a seductive, romantic shrine to the Renaissance for art enthusiasts, nature-lovers enjoying the beautiful landscape, or for those studying the history and architecture. However, there are some warnings for travelers to consider.
Brazen Thieves at the Train Station
Potential muggers are waiting for tourists to steal phones, cameras, and wallets. Pickpockets are everywhere these days, so try not to keep all your belongings with you or in the same place when you’re carrying them. The locals there know a tourist when they see one. Sometimes they try to sell you something and as you pull out your wallet, they snag it. Selling in this manner is illegal but you will see them everywhere. Just be firm with them and don’t pull out any money around them.
Caution: Heavy Traffic and Moped Drivers
Florence is small and easy to navigate on foot, however, you must be very careful when walking. There is an abundance of cars that drive rather fiercely along the narrow cobblestoned streets of Florence. Also, many of the locals drive mopeds. It looks very quaint until you realize they’re driving on the wrong side of the road or on the sidewalk. The good news is they sound like a swarm of bees so you can hear them coming.
Paying to Use a Public Restroom?
Be alert, almost all the toilets in all the big train stations are pay toilets and can charge as much as 70 cents! Most shops and stores have restrooms that are open to the public and not just patrons. Department stores usually offer a better experience.
Buyer Beware
Purchasing Italian leather and other souvenirs can be cherished for many years and it’s always fun to tell the story of your fabulous find. But beware that counterfeit goods are sold everywhere, which is a crime. In Italy, its buying such a fake is a crime too and the buyer may be forced to pay a penalty.
