Everglades National Park Warnings and Dangers
With hundreds of varieties of bird and fishes, the Florida Everglades is a nature and animal enthusiast dream come true. The Everglades hosts a variety of hiking trails and camping areas but be aware that there are tips you should consider while on the path to discovery.
Permits
Make a list of where you want to set up campsites and activities because you may need a permit. Permits are not issued over the telephone and are only issued the day before your activity. Wilderness permits are written from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center only for two land sites in the Long Pine Key area: Ernest Coe and Ingraham Highway. For all other campsites, permits may be obtained at the Flamingo and Gulf Coast Visitor Centers.
Wild Animals
Listen and be alert for aggressive animals, including crocodiles, panthers, snakes, etc. You’re in their home uninvited and if you get too close they may feel threatened. Mosquitos are prevalent and can carry disease, so don’t forget the repellent and consider taking a net to cover your head and face.
Hurricane Season
Keep in mind that May through November is hurricane season and is also the rainy season for this area. Humidity is likely to be at 100 percent. If you reserved a guided tour, boat rental, or camping equipment and it rains, you may get partial or even all your money back depending on the return policy.
