Durres Warnings and Dangers
If you are planning a vacation to Durres in the near future, there are a few important things to keep in mind, most importantly your safety. Here are a few warnings and dangers to heed while visiting Durres.
Food and Water
Generally speaking, the food is safe to eat in Durres. However, you need to be careful about where you eat (and what). Good restaurants aren’t really an issue but there can be problems with the milk in Durres. The cows in this area often suffer from TB and various other diseases that can be passed into their milk. Avoid milk products unless you know for certain that it has been heat treated. You should also not drink any water that isn’t bottled water while you are visiting Durres, and even then the bottled water can be poor quality so make sure you buy a trusted brand.
As the poorest area in Europe, there are some things to watch out for. One thing to keep in mind is the foreign military presence in the area, supporting the KFOR mission. Impassible roads occur near the foothills during the winter time, so driving can be difficult. Many tourists and locals have also noted that the police in Durres are very corrupt, and if you park illegally they will take your plates and make you pay a fine to get them back. It is advised that when going into the station to not look like you have money to try and avoid these fines. Avoid any dodgy looking bars at night, as many of them have a mafia haunt to them.
