Tips on Durban Warnings or Dangers

Durban Warnings or Dangers

The charming city of Durban is South Africa’s largest port city, and is a  melting pot of African, Indian, and British cultures.  However, South Africa does have a reputation as a high crime country, and Durban is no exception. Here are some of travelers’ top tips on staying safe and healthy in Durban.

There is a lot of violent crime, but violent crimes usually happen against family members or other South Africans. Still, don’t put yourself in harm’s way by being careless with your possessions or letting people see if you have a lot of money. Also, stay on the beaten tourist path.

When you’re in a car, always keep your doors locked and don’t leave valuables in view. You could be a target for carjackers if they think you have a lot of money, or if they think they could get a big ransom for you. Muggings also happen often, so try to avoid being alone at all times.

Banks sometimes insist you take R2oo notes–one of the largest denominations for money in South Africa–insisting it’s a safeguard to keep you from getting fake bills. Even so, many small merchants have trouble making change for that size of note. It’s better if you can get smaller denominations, such as R100 notes, when you make your money exchange.

South Africans suggest not giving money to people begging on the street, as it encourages them to be more aggressive. If you want to help the plight of the poor, you can donate to charities in Durban instead.

HIV warnings

South Africa has among the world’s highest HIV rates. Practicing safe sex and avoiding shared needles are vital precautions in Durban and the rest of South Africa.
