You may see street merchants peddling Rolex watches, Omega watches, and other expensive-looking jewelry. Be careful. These items are probably knock-offs.
Be Wary of the Mall
Going to the mall in Davao can be dangerous if you are not careful. There have been shooting incidences that resulted in the guards being required to carry firearms. When you get to the mall, the guards will pat you down. This is for your safety as well as the safety of others.
Poverty in Davao
Poverty is a serious issue in Davao. Young children will ask for money whenever they see you on the streets. If you give one a few coins be prepared for a dozen or more children to approach you asking for money as well. It may seem harmless to give these kids who are in need some money, but the wrong person may see that you have plenty of cash to give away. You could be making yourself a target for thieves.
No Smoking in Davao
The city of Davao has assigned a task force to ticket anyone who smokes. Although you can smoke at home, public places are off limits. You will be fined if you try to light up in restaurants, parks, malls, bars, and other public facilities. If you’re caught smoking in public multiple times, you could risk a possible jail sentence.
