Tips on Corsica Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Corsica Warnings and Dangers

The French island of Corsica attracts droves of travelers with its picturesque coastline and rolling landscapes. Just like any popular destination, Corsica does have its dangers. Here’s a list of safety tips and suggestions to keep you safe.

Don’t Depend on Credit Cards

Corsica differs from mainland Europe primarily in its widespread refusal of credit card payments. Even within the cities many tourists have discovered that credit cards are not accepted at many shops, restaurants, or hotels. The owners of the establishments explain that the merchant system for credit cards is too complex and costly here to make it worth their while to accept credit. An easy way to get around this danger is to simply carry enough cash to handle your daily transactions. Make sure to have enough cash on hand, especially outside the city, and where ATMs might be difficult to find.

Driving

In the main cities roads wind along the coast, allowing drivers to take in beautiful views. Venture away from the cities, though, and the quality of the roads rapidly deteriorates. Drivers report very narrow roads only wide enough for about one car and littered with holes. If driving in the country, be on the lookout for farm animals crossing the road. Drunk driving is a problem in Corsica, especially in the evening after people return home from a night out on the town.

Heat

The temperature in Corsica can sky rocket quickly. Be sure to drink plenty of water to stay well hydrated. If you are planning a day at the beach, use plenty of sunscreen and invest in a hat or parasol to stay covered and protected from the sun.

Theft

Just like any major city, Corsica is home to plenty of thieves and pickpockets that are looking to prey on tourists. Make sure your belongings are well protected and not within easy reach of people passing by. Thieves are also common in the rural areas of Corsica too. If camping or spending a day at the beach, be sure to not leave your belongings unattended.
