Tips on Como Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Como Warnings and Dangers

Planning a visit to Como, Italy? Prepare for a breathtaking trip, just take note of a few warnings.

It is not unusual for Como to experience flooding. The lake has no outlet, and in spring when the ice from the Alps melts or in autumn when it rains quite a bit, flooding can quickly become a significant issue. Not all of the area is affected, but the harbor area has a low ground level, so flooding here can be troublesome. On occasion, the water has washed through the Piazza Cavour up to the Duomo and caused quite a lot of damage to the touristy lakefront. Several of the hotels in this area have raised entrances for protection in case of flooding.

Como is very close to the Swiss border and unlike many other places, police in Como also enforce Swiss laws, particularly when it comes to parking. The best advice is to park in a proper designated car park, and watch out for men who watch over spaces and try to give you a ticket to park there, they have a reputation for overcharging tourists. There is an underground car park called Centro Lago, the entrance is between Via Recchi and Via Sant’elia, since it is underground it provides shade from the sun during hot days.

Other Items of Note

Como has a one-way road system around the center, which can be challenging for people not used to these types of roads.

Try not to walk alone at night, particularly near the San Giovanni train station. Always remain aware of your surroundings and the people near you.
