Charlotte Warnings and Dangers
Charlotte is, for the most part, a welcoming and safe city. However, there are a few dangers you should know about and a few tips you should consider before visiting Charlotte.
The East Side
The east side of the city is generally where the majority of petty crimes (such as theft) are committed. As long as you play it smart you should be alright, but it is generally recommended to avoid walking through the east side of the city at night. Central Avenue runs into Independence Blvd. and Monroe Road and this is the location you should typically avoid.
Parking Your Vehicle
Parking in Charlotte isn’t much of a problem. There are plenty of garages and some open lots near the stadiums. If you park your vehicle for an athletic event make sure to return to your vehicle shortly after if you parked in an open lot. These lots have security for a short period after the event is done, but after an hour or so there is no more security and you’re vehicle will be left in the open. If you plan on going out for dinner or drinks following the event, you’ll be better served parking in a covered garage. Wherever you park, make sure to take valuables with you and lock the vehicle.
Road Names Are Challenging
The name of a single road can often change, which makes it difficult to follow instructions. If you have to drive in the city, it is best to use the GPS, otherwise, you’ll quickly become confused while attempting to navigate streets with changing names.
City Shuts Down with Snow
From time to time, Charlotte does see snowfall. This may be a half inch here or there, but it never stays around for longer than a few days. Even if you are from the North or Midwest, avoid driving in Charlotte if there is snow. The entire city more or less shuts down (it doesn’t have the infrastructure to remove snow) and local drivers are not accustomed to handling a vehicle on snow, which creates dangerous conditions.
Drinking Tea
If you are watching your sugar levels for one reason or another, avoid drinking the tea. All tea on menus are served sweetened unless otherwise indicated. If you order tea and don’t want it sweet, make sure to specify.
