Cape Verde Warnings and Dangers
Cape Verde is an island country off the northwest coast of Africa. While its coasts and beaches are sublime, Cape Verde can be a dangerous place if you’re not prepared.
Crime
Crime, especially theft, is a problem in Cape Verde. When out at night, don’t walk down dark alleyways or roads. Also, don’t venture into areas you’re unfamiliar with. If you’re staying in the capital, Praia, be on the lookout for pickpocketers, especially around the airport. After you land, keep a close eye on your luggage. Men and boys may try to grab your bags and carry them for you. While at first this appears to be a kind gesture, it often ends with them demanding payment for the services they provided. Before your trip, talk to your travel agent and your hotel and make a list of safe places to visit while in town. As long as you’re alert, you’ll be fine.
Surfing
Surfing is a favorite pastime in Cape Verde. The waves along Santa Monica beach, on one of prime spots on the island, are massive. Cape Verde attracts some of the best surfers in the world. Here, the waves and currents are strong, and the reef is close by, so don’t head out on the water unless if you’re new to the sport.
