Mostar Tourist Traps
Medieval architecture, outstanding natural beauty, and the famous Stari Most make Mostar one of the most visited places in Bosnia. Of course as with any great destination, Mostar has a number of traps tourists will want to avoid.
Parking and Taxis
Parking can be difficult in the old town section. Unattended vehicles frequently get broken into. Parking lot attendants routinely overcharge customers. An attendant in the square by Benetton will keep an eye on your car for a small fee.
Avoid taxis, especially from the bus station. They’ll offer to drive unsuspecting travelers to town for as much as ten euros (about the cost of a good meal). The trip then only takes about six or seven minutes and could have easily been walked. Mostar is a very small town and visitors will not need a taxi for most places. If you must take a taxi, fix the price before you get in.
Shopping and Scams
Many shops line the riverside . Some charge more than others for the exact same thing. Also, some of the crafts are made at a factory while others come directly from the individual artists who usually sell better quality.
Ignore the diver on the Stari Most, a bridge built by the Ottoman Empire in the sixteenth century. Handlers come around and take bets on whether or not he will dive. If enough people bet he won’t dive, he will dive. If people bet that we will, then he will not. It’s a scam.
